New Server

The site crashed a day ago and I just received this message from my web host earlier this morning...

Quote:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, unfortunately due to the failure of the primary hard drive on saturn.select-servers.com, I regret to inform you that all of the data on the server has been lost. Over the past 12 hours we've worked vigorously to try and restore your data, however all attempts were fruitless.
....
On a better note, we will be issuing everyone 2 months of free service for all the trouble.
...
Sorry for the trouble and thank you for your patients in this matter.
I think it's hilarious that he incorrectly spelled patience. So, what does this mean for Pligg? Well, we lost all of our database information from the forums unfortunately. I have a backup from when Pligg was just starting out with probably about half of the forum members and some of the earliest messages.

I already started moving to Ash's server last night and I'm waiting for the nameservers to resolve. While the site was down a few of us have been gathered in the Pligg IRC room working on the Pligg code and moaning about how horrible my webhost is. We have added a couple things to Pligg since the site went down yesterday, including a couple big changes that will help many people install Pligg without having to edit some of the files. The good news is that if you are reading this post now on the pligg forums the nameservers are set and everything is working fine.

A new feature that I added just minutes ago is the ability to use Pligg as a podcasting tool. The podcasting tool hasn't been perfected yet, but it works fine with iTunes as is.

Podcast Example:

Ash came up with the birlliant idea of cacheing articles as html and leaving just teh votes and new comments as php. This will help reduce the server load, but it requires a lot of CSS editing. We are still going over ideas about what we should do with the styling system for Pligg. One user has been pushing the idea of using the Smarty template system, but Ash and I haven't had any experience with Smarty so we are hesitant.

Back to server news...
Expect the site to be back up and running later today. As soon as the nameservers change I will put Pligg back up. I am sorry that we will lose a lot of the forum posts during this change, the good news is that a lot of the old posts won't be needed. The next version of Pligg 5 should make a lot of the old forum posts obsolete.
