http://www.pligg.com/faq.php#update Quote:
Most Pligg updates/upgrades will require you to only upload files over your existing "core" files. The "core" reffers to anything outside of the template, image, and css directory. This will reduce the risk of accidentally overwriting customized template files. When a MySQL change is needed we will provide an upgrade script that will be located in your /install directory and note this change in the readme file. Another file that you should be sure to backup is the language file. This file can be found at /libs/lang.conf. The language file keeps track of all language customizations that you have made throught he language configuration panel found in the admin panel. You may be required to add additional fields to this file as Pligg updates to allow for greater customization. We will let you know when and what you will have to update in this file. The final item that might need to be upgraded or reinserted during an upgrade would be the .htaccess file. At times we will update the .htaccess file during upgrades, so if you have a customized version for previous installs you will need to check for any updates to this file between releases.
As a general warning, you should always backup your Pligg web directory and MYSQL before attempting to update.

Basically 6.01 is just an updated version of 5.10 with a new template. I would highly suggest making the update if you have already run a 5.x version with Smarty. I will try to expand on the FAQ and create some tutorials for Pligg over the next couple weeks.
