I was using the Better Captcha system for a while, and got just as much if not more spam than I did previously.
There's a
good thread on implementing the solid(er) and accessible Recaptcha service into Pligg.
I've not been using it long enough to see if it's made a difference. I agree that Akismet is a good way to go.
