What pligg needs is SEMANTICS!
For those of you who don't know what it is, look here:

To make a long story short, semantics are all about showing people related and interesting content. By interesting, I mean interesting to the individual not to the common user.
An example:
If a pliggsite is about golf, and an individual (a specific user) votes on a story about golf and babes, you have got some information on that specific user; he likes gold AND babes. The next time something with golf AND babes occurs, the pligg system will know that he's probably interested, and it'll be able to tell him about it.
By that you increase the positive experience of the site for each individual using the site.
It is not just about stories. When you start to collect information on a user, you can take advantage of it, and show him different kind of (in his opinion) interesting products, websites, tips, movies etc. (All these products, websites, tips, movies etc. can be loaded from sites like
Freebase, an open source knowledge tank)
A plus is the affiliate part of it. If you show people products and links they care about, and not just products and links which are relevant to the topic of your pligg site, it's obvious that sales will increase.
