There appears to be a bug with Google, because MANY people are complaining about this problem across the web with their different sitemaps. It has been occurring over the last 30 days or so. Nobody has an answer yet -- but it is evident that Google has changed something.
Many sites are also complaining about not getting their pages indexed so much either as before, and many have dropped in the rankings due to this bug (or change?) These aren't just Pligg sites either, but ALL DIFFERENT SITES from different webmasters.
I know my site has dropped in the rankings and right now it is so sporadic, one week it's kicking butt with loads of traffic and the next week it completely disappears with no traffic whatsoever! This has been happening recently, within the last 3 weeks. It's killing me with this cat and mouse thing Google has going on right now. I wish they would just fix the problem already. I am almost tempted to get rid of my sitemap if the problem doesn't get resolved soon.
