Poll: A Solution For Speed Problem

Hello.
Reading the opened post with regard to the problems of speed pligg I have concluded that is very probably that the real problem are the sql queries.
I am aware that sites like tecnhorati or wikio should have multiple servers to work with even dedicated servers for mysql.
But I can not believe that a site with 40/50.000 stories and 500 unique visitors per day has the need to erase the oldest stories, comments and other parties to avoid the collapse of the server or should take a dedicated server all'sql.
Today my Xenfra.com has 57,000 stories and 21,000 pages indexed on google. its strength for the future is precisely the number of pages that Google indexes and that may be clicked by users.
But the server (quad-core with 2 gb ram) is having problems and few solution configuration php and sql are the only suggest that I have found. The only real solution is to delete the old stories and take another server.
Thinking in this manner pligg will always be a platform that does not guarantee the ability to monetize gain because the relationship between resources necessary hardware and traffic is not commensurate with the revenue.
I unfortunately can not make the necessary changes ... I’m not so good.
But I can also contribute significantly so that this problem be addressed once and by developers pligg.
I am sure that a poll would emerge many other users of pligg available to fund these changes as long as these changes become a priority compared to many other things which are not there do nothing if pligg turns evil.
Good work at all.

Maybe a idea for the pligg developers, build a archive into pligg... I don't think they could do something about the speed, because sql has his limitations.

Send a message via MSN to skins4webs
Give the developers time to come out with the next release of pligg. Of course they want pligg to improve just like we do, Offering donations is good to do anyway , Just let them address things in the order they have outlined.

Hi Xenfra

We use the same template, is very nice but slow. Other point we use the same RSS import module for the tags, so like me you will have more than 50.000 tags in your database, make this test remove for a few days in your side bar the tags include and see... this "modification" will improve the speed.

I create a theard about this point http://forums.pligg.com/pligg-mods/1...ble-mysql.html

The pligg_link in database it's not really a big trouble, the search will take a lot of ressource too, may it will be a good idea to thinking an alternative than full text search in database.

Best regards

Clément

This poll really isn't fair for everyone. Depending on their their setup each person will have different results.
There are multiple reasons for a site being slow. The first reason is the most obvious.. Most people expect a web 2.0 CMS to work flawlessly on their web 1.0 hosting. This even goes with those that say "I am on a dedicated host.
You can't expect to clone Digg, Delicious, Reddit type traffic with only software. Hardware should be expected.
No one is saying pligg is perfect but this poll is nothing more than a thinly disguised complaint for not realizing that hardware is just as important as software.

If for clone you intend a site with the same traffic and the same large number of news published every minute, I fully agree with you: the hardware is crucial: Google can't work's on shared hosting like geppettosearch.dj like digg can't work's on my dedicated server.

But if a quad-core may not be enough with 50,000 news and 300 visitors per day than I think that this is not as smooth as thinking that never must invest in hardware.

At this point I think it is important to resolve, for what can be done, these problems. For example: improving queries, make optional ALL the functions of pligg that can slow it informing the users direct in admin panel, create optimization functions of the database (elimination of comments until a certain date, elimination of double tags and particular tag) and others that I am not able to identify. Is my opinion that these things, taken together, could improve the situation and should take precedence over other because essential for a smooth operation for the benefit of all users, even those users who do not see the need at this time.

I am willing to make a donation intended for these problems and as I think there are other available to do so.

The purpose of the survey is not to avoid investing in hardware but to identify potential donors and to solicit developers to tackle a definitive (where is possible). Also because there are many posts that talk about these problems and always we must fix partial solutions and praying that do not cause damage and that serve to something.

That’s all.

Well, like I originally said everyones speed issues will be different. For example I looked at
Code:
 http://www.xenfra.com/
The 4th hop from the Fangio server goes through SkyOnline SA Argentina. This server is having some serious issues which will decrease your speed considerably.

Also while doing a load test on your site I found the following issues.

TOTAL_IMAGES - The total number of images on this page is 84 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your graphics.

IMAGES_SIZE - The total size of your images is 143935 bytes, which is over 30K. Consider optimizing your images.

EXTERNAL_SCRIPT_SIZE - The total size of external scripts is 66325 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your scripts for size.

I would also suggest using something like
Code:
http://www.gomez.com/info_center/instant-test.php
to test your site. You can see which files are taking the most time to load.

If you use the firefox web browser you can download the web developer add-on which can help you analyze your website rather quickly and pinpoint exactly where you need to make changes.

This free tool can be downloaded at Web Developer Plugin

Also Firebug is a must! - I use both but keep firebug disabled until needed. WebDeveloper seemed to have issues with editing Pligg CSS but I noticed it has been updated since last time I used it. Another cool Firebug feature is load your page while watching "net" tab.
