Improving the avatar upload system

Just wondering if there any plans to improve the avatar upload system in the next release of pligg? The current system is a bit confusing

I was about to try to dig around and see what i could do to improve it but I'm not sure if i'm up to the challenge

and I don't want to try if someone else is already working on it.
