Ok this may be really easy to do but I have searched the forums and can't find a way...
Basically all I want to do is number the comments so that whichever order is chosen from the admin menu (top rated 1st, newest 1st, etc.) the first comment displayed has a 1 next to it, the second is 2, and so on.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

You may be able to do something with the ordered list tag <ol>
