I was getting irritated waiting for everything to load on my pages and found that the biggest bottleneck was all the sidebar modules. So, I took most of the stuff out of the sidebar.tpl or rather released the dependency on login before showing the mods.
Now, the only dynamic call in sidebar.tpl is the login box. Everything else is static and appears on every page...or if it's dynamic, it's pulling from a 3rd party, such as MyBlogLog.
The speed improvement is definitely noticeable. I assume there would be similar advantages for all templates, but I'm using Digital Nature.

yes there will be a performance enhancement, it doesn't have to keep joining tpl files. But for maintainability, it's easier for a user to see it in separate files. Guess once they do all the changes, they can put it all into one tpl file.
