Since we are in beta and it looks like we'll be doing many upgrades (which is great) I think there should be a "site under maintenance " feature where you can shutdown the site and show a friendly message. This page would have a login box so administrator can still acccess the pages.

The 2 apps I use and install with some regularity both have this feature.

Here is a current site of mine with that feature enabled.

http://www.canadapc.com

If I log in to the site it functions as usual for me.
It allows me to work and experiment on the site without embarrassment because I tend to break things

Randy

Get the template system right.

The absolute lack of development in this area shows what a bad idea it was.
Dont get me wrong, i make templates for other CMS systems, and make good money from it, but pligg was just a damn headache. The effort is not worth the reward.
If that is 'smarty' living up to its fullest, please rename it to 'not so smarty - and slightly retarded".

but the submit page is absolutely amazing!!

The form adjusts whether you want to submit a video, picture, story, etc.

Enter an URL and it grabs all the images from that page and you get to pick which one is associated with the story.
You can upload an image as well
For video it asks for the embed code.

Their bookmarklet takes the title and any selected text as well as the URL.

I also like how the embedded videos aren't displayed on the list pages, only on the specific "discuss" pages.

Very slick site, especially the submit page.
Good hunting ground for ideas for Pligg.

Randy
You have some great ideas. I've taken the eatmyhamster idea to Zeegal and asked him to implement in SuperGu.

Thanks Randy.

Lightbulb

  1. I'd like to see how many users vote for or against things.
  2. Which also means I'd like users to be able to vote against things.
  3. A collaborative calendar
  4. or just a calendar.
  5. A placeholder for the site logo for easy branding
  6. A unified page for easier template editing. It's hard tracking down all the files that go into the main page.

The site has made amazing progress in the short time it's been around. Great work everyone!

Everything is OK, but the BIG problem is slow page load. Why not fix this problem first.

domba, this has been talked about before. Some people have said that a template system called template lite would be a good alternative to smarty and is around 30% faster.

Improved Search & Filters

One of the things I really would like to see in pligg is a better search/filter functionality:
searchles implements this very nicely IMO.

Thumbs up Login Popup Window

Something that works something like that would be a nice feature to add. I don't like the way sites (including Pligg) just take you to the login page when clicking something that you have to be logged in to use. It should just be a note that comes up saying this is a member feature or something like that, and points you to where and what is needed. Something friendlier than just dumping you in the login page.
Just a thought.
Can get the code from http://prototype-window.xilinus.com/

Since Pligg also uses Prototype (right?) this will be awsome... and not only for the login form as you may see in their samples

Best,

Lopo
