Avatars

I've finished the code for using Gravatars in Pligg. It will either be in Beta 6 or in a version released shortly after Beta 6.

http://www.gravatar.com/
A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an 80×80 pixel avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?

In the config file you'll find....

//Gravatar http://www.gravatar.com/implement.php#section_1_1
define('Enable_Gravatar', true); // true or false
define('Gravatar_Maxrating', 'G'); // G, PG, R or X (avatars are rated by admins at gravatar.com)
// ---

Cool. This is a nice feature I think necessary for social style sites.

Soon I'll release a "nightly" version that will have support for user uploadable avatars. I like the gravatar idea still, so this new version will allow users of your site to pull a copy of thier gravatar and save it onto your server, or upload an avatar to your server. This allows continued use of gravatar without the slowness that occasionaly comes with it.

Awesome I can't wait tell it's out! But, theres one problem...is this nightly version going to have a update with skidoo_too? My template that I made only worksfor skidoo_too. It doesn't work for mollio-beat.

Great, thanks a lot for adding this! So that's in the Pligg Nightly 198?

What ever happened to Gravatars? I'd love the option to show them, as many users won't spend the time to upload a picture to the site (which is why Gravatars exists, so you can do it in one place).

The gravatars server ended up be too slow for most of the site owners. After many complaints we finally just removed them from Pligg.

For a future release you might consider having it cache the images. I use a WordPress plugin (MBLA, http://kamajole.dk/blog/2007/01/12/mbla/) that does it that way and it works great. It also allows you to choose between MyBlogLog or Gravatar. I'm no coder, but I bet you could use a lot of the code in the plugin as it is...

::bump:: If this code is still around, might be worth implementing...especially since Gravatar is now run by WordPress, I imagine the speed issues are nill...The caching is a good idea as well.

I'd love to see Gravatars as an option. Possibly for Pligg 1.0?
