If there are no hardcoded width and height sizes in the image tags, it should be a simple matter of substituting the stars' images. Naturally, the more flexibility built into the star rating system (such as the ability to show *both* the user's rating as well as the average overall rating as is currently the case, to go with the number of votes) would be awesome.

what happenen if the first 5 ppl rate it a 3 (so it gets promoted) then the next 5 ppl rate it a 1? will it get demoted? (since its effective ranking is now 2)

I'd reckon to continue in the democratic fashion, if more people rate it low so it goes down the threshold, then it goes to argue that the "majority" don't like it, and therefore should get demoted. I can see how this "might" rollercoaster when one group votes it up, only to be voted down eventually by another group, then up.... until the userbase gets saturated; you get the idea. But this can be left alone and become such a possible consequence, kind of like how the standard way of voting could get a negative vote (or spam report, etc.) anyway, and more or less produce the same result. |

I like the current digg system of voting (3/22/06) for "user" comments. I would change the "bookmark / link / news" voting to "up or down" or "+ or -" instead of just "digg it", and show the vote count. I would really like to vote "for" or "against" a submitted story / link. In this way I think stories promoted to the Frontpage would better reflect "relevent" news, etc. And finally, Pligg would be better then Digg. |

I personally wouldn't mind seeing a rating scale style vote, either coupled with the digg style or on its own. The digg method isn't always the most accurate, and a type of site that I am planning on would be one of those. If its an option, I don't see why it would be a problem.

I read AshDigg's blog about the 5-star system, and read this thread. I'm psyched to see that a 5-star system may be in the works, because I need that kind of system in the site I'm building now. I'll probably still need to tweak the ranking logic myself, but it would be awesome to have the basics in place first. So, I'm curious, any estimate on when the 5-star voting system will be released? Thanks! |

| about that rating system - what about this?
somebody talked about articles that go up and down and then vanish etc... what if: there's a page called "near death" that displays all items one vote away from being demoted - and another called "recently deceased" that shows items recently killed...this would allow people to save items in the event that simply hadn't been to the site in a while... then people could do site wide searches, including not just 'in the queue' but also dead and near death... does that make sense? |

Interesting, but too much complexity. It can't be said enough, KISS. As far as I know, if a story is 'killed to death', it's still searchable, which is what you want. "More content good, less content bad." Google, 2006 ~3d |
