Rating system

How do things stand on the rating system? I mean, it seems to have been brought up, then just completely dropped, and it sounds relatively simple to implement so I don't know why it is over 6 months later and there isn't any news updates if there is still plans to even include it or not.

We actually picked it back up this week to restart development on the 5 star rating system. We have it semi-functional, but we need to tweak the algorhythm so that stories with X votes and X average votes get published. Right now its only determining the publish status by the votes alone. You can probably expect this release with the next beta version, and no we can't give a specific time for that release.

So, expect it to become available in beta 9? Sounds cool with me. Any chance it will be in any of the nightlies or SVN before then?

It's in the Pligg code on the SVN now but like Yank said. The algorithm for promoting stories needs to be redone. Right now it promotes stories based on vote count, not the average star rating.

All you would need to do is replace a single image to change the look of the rating button. Attached is one version of the image with a gray background that I'm using in the paul01 template. This will give you an idea of the image layout. The top star is the unfilled star, the second star is the average vote star, and the bottom star is the hover star.

Perhaps some would like it, but the masses like simplicity. Why not let them rate each story on a five-axis scale, 1-100 on each? Too complex, you say? So is five-starring for a Digg site.

ronoxQ, that's why the star rating would be an option. If you don't think it would fit your Pligg site you can always use the voting method.

I understand that the voting system will still be an option but are the developers now planning to continue to work on the voting system at all or will the focus be entirely on ratings?

I ask because i would be very interested in seeing a bump down vote feature like on digg being added to pligg. But more importantly I want to make sure that as other features like karma evolve they will continue to work with the voting system.

We wish we could tell you that we were working on that stuff but with only 2 people (maybe 3) who consistantly work on the Pligg code it's hard to say when anything can get done. Especially when almost all of the activity takes place on the weekends.
