This is for Beta 9.8.2. If you have Beta 9.9, you already have Akismet installed.
  1. You'll need a WordPress API key if you don't already have one. You can get one here... Where is my WordPress.com API key? « WordPress.com
  2. Update your utils.php with this (click here) changeset
  3. Update your /libs/comment.php with this (click here) changeset
  4. Upload the contents of the attached file into your modules folder
  5. Enable the Akismet module
  6. Access the module by using the 'Spam' link at the top
  7. Enter your WordPress API key

If Akismet says a comment is spam, it will not be saved. It just disappears.

If Akismet says a story is spam, it is still submitted, but there will be a link at the top to either confirm or deny that it is spam. Confirming will change the status to discard.

This is a very basic / beta module and more features are coming.

To UPGRADE, just upload the new file, replacing the existing ones.

I can't change the Askimet options. When I go to the settings page they are listed but there is othing changeable or selectable. I just get this text:

Immediately discard spam (yes) (no)
Keep track of spam stats (yes) (no)
Disable a users account after (x) confirmed spam
Notify Akismet when you 'confirm' a spam submission (yes) (no)
Notify Akismet when you 'confirm' a false-positive (non spam) submission (yes) (no)

The module isn't finished yet. I started it a couple days ago and put it out for an early release because of the spammer. The options will be available in a future release.

Ash,

When I type in my Askimet key and click Update Key, the screen stays. Is this normal?

Where do I set settings? Or, how do I know it is now working?

Thanks!

OK, I did not update comments.php and utils.php correctly and now Askimet seems to be installed properly.

Question: Will this take care of the xxx@xxx.info spammer???

When you enter your WordPress key it should take you back to the Akismet main page. If you click on 'Manage WordPress Key' you should see your key in there. If this doesn't happen, it sounds like you did something wrong with step #2.
