This is for Beta 9.8.2. If you have Beta 9.9, you already have Akismet installed.
  1. You'll need a WordPress API key if you don't already have one. You can get one here... Where is my WordPress.com API key? « WordPress.com
  2. Update your utils.php with this (click here) changeset
  3. Update your /libs/comment.php with this (click here) changeset
  4. Upload the contents of the attached file into your modules folder
  5. Enable the Akismet module
  6. Access the module by using the 'Spam' link at the top
  7. Enter your WordPress API key

If Akismet says a comment is spam, it will not be saved. It just disappears.

If Akismet says a story is spam, it is still submitted, but there will be a link at the top to either confirm or deny that it is spam. Confirming will change the status to discard.

This is a very basic / beta module and more features are coming.

To UPGRADE, just upload the new file, replacing the existing ones.

I don't understand these parts here or what do do?

# Update your utils.php with this changeset
# Update your /libs/comment.php with this changeset

What is a change set?

Also that template folder in the download folder, does it go in my current template or what?

Does, akismet stand for Root in this case, root folder?

EDIT:

Thanks Ash this worked great 100%

Cheers,

bbrian017

I updated the instructions to make it more obvious to click on the word 'this' for the changesets.

Per step 4, simply upload the contents (the akismet folder) into the modules folder. Thats it.

I don't understand the question.
Sorry I guess all my years with phpbb I got confused and familiar with adding files a specific way. When I seen the templates folder I thought it was suppose to go into the templates folder.

Bad habits to get into I know

Thanks for the detailed explanation I will try and see if I can do it

Seriously wish me luck!

I installed and created a fake user!

The new registered user can also see the spam link in the header which leads them to a white page? Can we remove this?

Sign up's are still happening

Since this mod was installed I have about another 100 users

bit good news no spam comments

The odd thing is it's not showing the spam comments it deleted either?

Sounds like you didn't take the recommendation and install the registration by email confirmation module.

it seems to be working for me for comments. I'll update later. my site had been getting over 20 spam comments a minute for the past couple of hours but they have stopped for now. The user registration still hasn't stopped though. just crossed 500.
