How can I add new fields to user profile

I would like to add new fields to the user profile. I just realized that the user profile could be used as an options panel for users to control just about any aspect of the site, and it really wouldn't be too hard to setup. I want to allow users to active or deactive parts of my site, which would just require using if statements that checks what the status of certain fields/checkboxes are in the currently logged in users profile.

User_center.tpl already does this. Variables like $user_url, $user_aim are used to grab the right data for the user whos profile your looking at.

But for my options panel I would need variables that refer to the logged in user as opposed to the users whos profile your currently looking at. Does that make sense? If not let me know and I'll clarify.

If someone can help me a bit with this or at least point me in the right direction I would definately be willing to release my super user options panel when I'm done. This would be a really awesome feature for pligg, basically I could let users control anying. (I could have a field that dictates the color for the header, and in the inline css style the color for the header would simply be a variable that refers to whatever the logged in user put in that field... the possibilities are endless).
