Promotion explained.

Can someone explain how a link is promoted to the front page, or promoted from the queue to published and then what it takes for it to get to the front page?

people vote for it. when it has enough votes, it gets promoted. simple, no? ;) the number of votes required can be edited in your config file.

so how does something fall of the front page? I mean if something has 100 votes it can't actually lose votes can it? do links have some sort of shelf life?

is the promotion script similar to the karma in that it is run at an interval against the db? I take it karma should be calculated BEFORE promotion right?

it falls off the front page because NEWER content is being promoted. it's still promoted, its just a few pages back. you add articles 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10.

assuming it takes 3 votes to get promoted, article 3 gets 2 votes, 7 then 8 then 9 get 5 votes each. 3 gets another 2 votes.

your front page will look like:

9
8
7

ie: 7 got promoted, then 8 got promoted, pushing 7 down. then 9 got promoted pushing both down, then 3 got promoted, finally, and pushed them down.

now, that is NOT the only thing determining placement, i belive there is a value of how "hot" the story is at the moment.

and NO, to answer your second question, this is NOT run as a cron, it's done live, everytime a client requests it.

this is true, but like I said in your other post, karma dosent DO anything. right now it's JUST a number.

In Meneame - karma works there right? And pligg was originally written by the same person? Does that mean there's less working stuff in pligg than in the source code on meneame? (I saw a link somewhere to how promotion/karma etc. code looks ... )

Pligg is a fork of meneame, meneame doesnt support template.
