Some ABC, !23 Instructions Sorely Needed In Wiki, Tutorial Video or Something

Blessings and Peace:

Ricard G., thank you and (the other team members) for
your labor and vision. Its a pleasure, to not have to sit
on the sidelines of the Reddit/Digg phenom.

-----

Although I am a long time Internet technologist (before
Netscape existed), I am 'not' well versed in php and the
editing of CMS code.

What would be a HUGE, GREAT and APPRECIATED aid is
a tutorial guiding one through basic modifications. Sure
I was able to install with no problem, and sure I've searched
the forum to figure out that my default tempate is Digital Nature.
BUT WHY should I have to run around like a squirrel hunting
nuts, when an easily anticipated thing like 'how to change
your default page visuals' can be addressed????????

Surely you must know that one of the first things a newbie, or
anyone is going to want to do is: change out all the Pligg bites
plastered everywhere on the front page (i.e., title bar, upper
left corner, right above 'Vote for stories, footer of page). Geesh.
We already know its Pligg.

--------

What a first timer needs to know (IMHO) is:

1) How do I change the hexi (7BB224) to a different color?
2) How do I switch out the Pligg graphic for my own?
3) How do I get rid of Pligg Beta 9 in the cener menu section (geesh!!)
4) How do I take control of the footer?
5) How do I change the title bar (to not read PB 9/Published)?

At least installers can begin to feel that the canvas is their's and
NOT pliggs, once they can see their own signature on the front page.

Thanks for your immediate attention to this matter. Apologies, in
advance, if I've missed some doc that address these issues. I looked
in the wiki and tutorial section before posting.

perhaps you could make a little wiki page that addresses those issues, anyone can edit it, you don't need an account. It helps the devs by letting them have more time to code!

We expect that most people who install Pligg have a basic knowledge of HTML/CSS so we don't really want to spend time addressing every small configuration that's possible through some simple tweaking of code. A lot of the questions you are asking are really simple to figure out and can be found in the CSS for your template.

1) How do I change the hexi (7BB224) to a different color?
  • Check the CSS files that your template uses and change them appropriately.
2) How do I switch out the Pligg graphic for my own?
  • Assuming you're asking about the DigitalNature logo, you will need to modify the image: /templates/digitalnature/images/logo.png.
3) How do I get rid of Pligg Beta 9 in the center menu section?
  • Log in as a "god" level user (default username: god password: 12345)
  • Navigate to: /module.php?module=admin_language
  • Change variables by clicking on them to bring up an in-line editing tool.
4) How do I take control of the footer?
  • Edit the footer.tpl file from your /templates/TEMPLATENAME/ directory.
5) How do I change the title bar (to not read PB 9/Published)?
  • See Question 3
We really can't go into any more detail because it's up to you to Google around and learn how to perform simple CSS/HTML/Image modifications.

Yankidank:

While I certainly appreciate your taking out time to answer the questions I posed,
I do take issue on a couple of things:

1) In your above quote, you lump HTML and CSS together. They are by no way synonymous. One can have edited straight HTML for years (as I and other have), and not have dealth with CSS. Such a position while maybe not enviable, is nonetheless a reality.

If Pligg is going to 'expect' a certain level of CSS skills, then say that up front. Create a simple section titled "Getting Ready for Pligg", where you spell this out.
Also, you can allude to it in the Read Me file.

2) "it's up to you to Google around and learn" What sense does it make for person after person to 'Google around' looking in disparate places, for information that can be aggregated ONCE and made available in the Pligg resources. Much effort is put into billing Pligg as an accessible and easy to use tool, why not extend that accessibility to as wide an audience as possible? It won't take that much at all.

------

Again, thank you for your time spent in answering my reply. I will make my small contribution, by taking the suggestion of ec3r0 and starting a wiki entry.

For a new user who is using pligg with no basic knowledge about programming can be hard and there is no definitive guide, the holy manual, that will turn a newbie into a professional. It requires a lot of time and dedication and practice.

But we can make this easier for the person starting new. So i started this page on the wiki. I will spend some time locating articles and relevant information that will be helpful and hope others will contribute as well. But it depends on the pligger how far are they willing to go.

I hope i haven't come off as an elitist or (i don't know the exact word). Hope this helps every one.

Savant, your effort to 'get the explanation party started' is appreciated.

It is certainly not the Pligg Family's responsibility to turn anyone into a
'professional', or to create the holy manual on programming languages.

I just felt that a 'quick sheet', on how to edit the 'main' elements; that one
would one to lay claim to first would help.

If one is even comfortably familiar with FTP'ing and editing HTML, they could
'stumble' better; at least knowing exactly where they're stumbling to.

I tried to offer a 'stumble list' (if that makes any sense). Even while one is tackling the learning curve, at least having their front page edited to their own branding is a big encouragement.

Again, thanks for your hand.

If you notice the dates, this was from several months ago. We have since moved to the new Wiki located here.

moved, but..

"If you notice the dates, this was from several months ago. We have since moved to the new Wiki located here."

Yes, I understand that, but was unable to locate the same article by the same author, Savant.
