Major Upgrade... Suggestions?

Hey all. I’m at a loss… I really want to upgrade my site to the latest version of Pligg not only for the RSS importer feature but also for template lite. My site’s getting traffic enough that I’m actually noticing enough slow down from the template engine to start thinking about an upgrade. Here’s the problem: I’m currently running version 7.2 and it’s heavily modified. Not just the template but also the core engine. Do any of you guys have any experience doing a major upgrade like this and merging code changes? I’ve tried using a program called beyond compare to diff the files but there are so many differences it just seems overwhelming.

Suggestions and/or offers to help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It's a tough issue. For the template I would suggest going to the different pages on your site and saving the source so you have the html.

My suggestion for all templates is they be submitted not only in template form, but as full html/css form so that it's easy to port them when there's an upgrade.

I use the commercial software CompareIt which is pretty much the same as WinMerge.

Hi

Do you have the original code for 7.2?

If you get tortoiseSVN it cames with a free tool called tortoise merge, that will allow you to see the difference between the files.

I recently did a upgrading from 8 to 9 for a client (dpix), and i had done some modding on pligg.

First we found out which files were changed with which mod.
Backup your files and database.

Perform the upgrade.
Slowly start plugging in your mods.
Make template changes so it would with latest code.

Problems:
i think the biggest problem is to try and get the templates up to date.
Next one was with the config tables and settings.php,

A recent problem was messaging wasn't working. We would get a javascript error no one had seen before. Later i found out two lines of html was missing from the footer.tpl

Give it a go, if any problem just post here.
