Can't admin a newly installed pligg and can't submit a new story

Hi,

I've installed Pligg and it seemed to succeed.

However when I go to the admin link (from the last install page) and login as god/12345 I don't see any administration capabilities. I get to the exact same page as before login.

Also, when I try to submit a new story it asks me to login. If I login then it brings me to the default page again. And if I try to submit a story it asks me to login again. And that goes on and on...

I can however register as a new user.

I'm running on:
Windows using IIS, php 5.1.2, MySQL 4.1

Thanks

IIS doesn't have support for basic features like redirecting and whatnot. For those reasons Pligg doesn't have 100% support for IIS.

This is not a case of Pligg not having 100% support for IIS. This is a case of Pligg having 0% support for IIS.

Are you saying Pligg simply doesn't run on IIS?

It is strange since I've seen posts explaining how to install Pligg on Windows and IIS (I mean what to download, etc.).

IIS does not support the way Pligg logs users in. You will have to mod Pligg to use the features that IIS supports. IIS is supposed to be used mainly with ASP applications, not PHP. If you can switch to Apache (and Linux, if possible) everything will work fine.

I see.

Apache/Linux are not an option for me.

Is there a known Pligg on IIS mod I can find anywhere?

If not, do you happen to know of other open source software similar to Pligg that does support IIS?

Thanks.

why not install xampp on your win box? I use it daily on my windows pc&laptop to develop pligg. Free and runs like a charm.

Obviously technically this is an option. However a few issues:
1. I have IIS on that machine with a few applications, meaning I'll have to use a port other than 80 for apache.

2. When you install an application in a corporate you can't just install whatever you want. You have various constraints, one of them being IIS should serve as the web server. They need to understand it, maintain it, etc.

In simple terms Pligg requirements is LAMP setup and no one has ever been successful over an IIS.

If the software is not compatible with your so called CORPORATE environment/constraints - it is time you have to look for alternatives :(

Hope this solves the question.

"I'll have to use a port other than 80 for apache"
>> isn't port 8080 a common port for www/http? I don't know {feces} about servers, so someone else might help you with that. Or maybe the sysadmins of your corp might know (they should, or you should fire them!).

If you want to run pligg for your corp...
(Makes sense actually! Why let all employees go through all the busoness related news when you can sift through the daily news with eachother to keep up with the changes in your business. Pligg is ideal for any >100 employees corporation to run on the intra/extranet. You can even use the "popular" feed of the intra/extranet to auto-display the latest business related news on you corporate site as an extra service for your visitors)

...why walk to any pc store and buy a $400,- PC and plug it in the server room? Geez... any $400 box is just fine. Put a live linux CD (with everything preset) in it, take a lunchbreak and when you come back it's done. Install pligg and give it to your sysadmin (or just put it in your office and plug it in the LAN).

...oops -- corporate rules.
I know that you have lotsa rules in larger corporations (I worked at Grey Global Group for 6 years, so i know the drill), but sometimes you just have to do stuff yourself to get things done.

...ok, to play it save.
Do you want all the hassle of pligg working with ISS or a new server? I mean all the talking with your boss and the sysadmin to solve this will be something like $3k in salary in no time. Just take a $10 a month hosting deal (running LAMP) and throw pligg on there. The costs aren't the problem, because you'll waste that $120 (12x$10) by discussing 30 minutes with your boss about whether to spend that money on hosting or not. If he/she is gonna bitch about the $120, just pay it out of your own pocket. Because all those hours of discussing, hassle and corporate-rules-blabla will make you wanna kill yourself in a week. Trust me, I've been there.
What i've learned: save yourself that time and just get some outside hosting (that isn't bitching about corporate rule this-and-that). Tell your boss this is just a temporary/experimental solution so you won't get fired. You will finish the project in 10% of the time, because your corporate sysadmins/rules/(put some other frustrations here) will waste 90% of your project. Getting the project done in only 10% of the time will get you a bonus, so don't be scared to get that outside hosting.

...problem solved? My 2 cents.
