Chmodding when installing

I was following the installation instructions at http://www.pligg.com/faq.php:

For something like
4. chmod 777
/avatars/user_uploaded
/backup
/cache
/templates
/templates_c

Do I just chmod just the directory, or it and all files and subdirectories?

all subdirectories of the above folders needs to be chmodded to 777 (but most doesn't have any sub-directories from the list mentioned)
