Currently, the mod doesn't transfer image files to your own server. It should be very easy to do.

Its working now for me but taking loads of time. any tip to speed up the image fetching process?

There is a drawback on using this bec it won't reduce the size of the image when submit. A hack on image_upload to implement the same approach as your current code will be a good start. Use GD and then when submits thumbnail is generated and uploaded to the site. I am working on this right now and will upate once done. I am using image_upload and lytebox to show images in pop up. See it in action in my mini-pligg site below. Thx to cents for having this module.
