The problem is that most people have turned the pligg forums from what was a place to share ideas and ask for help into their own little personal hang out with ulterior motives. The vast majority now DEMAND free customization help or they complain that no one answers their posts. Or they go and create bogus blogs and fill them with false rumors about pligg and or their developers, then they come back here and try to post as many times as they can in order to get traffic to these blogs.
Sadly some of you guys do visit these blogs and are gullible enough to believe them.
Do yourselves a favor and learn what open source actually means before you come here and constantly complain. It does not mean free. Look at Red Hat Linux for example.

I know what open-source means, that is understood. Sorry my quick one-liner pushed you the wrong way. I didn't read any blogs, or hear any rumors. It doesn't even bother me that people are charging for mods, and when I first saw the Pligg Pro shop I was inspired by the possibility of developers working hours and hours on core, and then recieving compensation for their work by pushing little useful widgets.

That aside, I am a long-term Wordpress/Drupal user, where the community exemplifies incredible activity, organization, helpfulness and kindness. Where in 99% of cases, code is free and handed over without any mention of monetary gain; only slight mention of donations.

With regards to the excellent plugin above, by examining the photo it is easy to assume that it uses lightbox (free, complex, hundreds of hours of development/browser compatibility testing) and an AJAX loader, possibly also a free library/snippet: (google: multiple file ajax upload)

To me it is a matter of ethic and moral standards. Personally, the only code I will sell to an open source community is code that will directly result in the end-user generating a profit, if the code was applicable to a select niche or in the event I was a core developer trying to leverage unpaid hours (example: Pligg Pro). But when it comes to *enhanced* functionality, where the more difficult half of the work is done by free libraries and/or snippets, I personally could not sell it. Specifically this feature, as to me it seems to be more of an optional core feature, opposed to an application specific module. Meaning, this type of module could be used in many Pligg applications. In no way does this feature directly result in the end-user generating a profit, it is simply enhanced functionality.

I could be speaking out of place, as I have personally not added any code to the core (though I would, if it were an option) and in the event I am horribly mistaken and every piece of that code was hand-written (minus lightbox), then I applaud you, because it does truly look like a beautiful feature. I may even purchase it in the future if it becomes something I would require.

My one liner may have been a little harsh, and I was far too general, obviously misunderstood. In no way was I referring to commercial modules being greedy, I enjoy the idea of Pligg Pro, and have injected funds into the Pligg developer economy through paid templates/modules.

This post is also so unrelated to this topic. Sorry ChuckRoast. I appreciate your involvement, probably as much as everybody else. Being new here, I definitely spoke out of place, keep up the great work.

na3s my comments were mainly directed towards bbrian017 who has consistently flip flopped on his stance of who should or should not be paid for their work. He is one of those people who will complain about having to purchase an add on, and condemn all those who sell them, but yet offer to pay someone to work solely on his own site through the pligg job board.

Unfortunately he has failed to realize that consistently complaining around here only puts him on the shortlist of being banned.

As you stated this whole conversation is really irrelevant to this authors thread. It's my firm belief that if someone puts in countless hours and wants to be paid for it, than so be it. I can tell you from my own experiences that asking for donations results in failure. For example one template that I released and asked kindly for donations only resulted in a total of $10.00 out of the current 8325 people using it. Sadly people even complained because I wouldn't help them customize it for free.
