Did you guys actually read the article? not the article written by Techcrunch but via the link to Venture Beat?

It never said it was 40K for a template.. nope.. just the whole project that they started last year to track independent software companies and pligg software was part of the project they used.. they started internally and intel felt that they need wider audience so they set their site externally instead...

If you look at the site, it's basically just a basic Pligg install with a modified template. That's why we have been saying that it's a $40k template. Lots of people have been saying that the $40k spent is justified because it costs that much to have an Intel staffer to build and support the site over a 6 month period, but that doesn't make any sense to me.

They could have saved money by...
A) Hire an Intern to do the same job at a tenth the cost. That's what I was hired to do this past summer using other open source CMS systems. I worked for a major technology company developing 2 websites.
B) Hire a freelancer to do the same job for a couple thousand.
C) Hire AshDigg for half a year to completely rewrite the code and provide Pligg 2.0. They would still have 15-20k left over!

This article was picked up on informationweek.com here.

Yank,
TechCrunch used the word "site" while VentureBeat used this word "project" so techcrunch's article is somewhat confusing... VentureBeat was more clear...
Quotes from VentureBeat » Intel launches a company-ranking site: CoolSW
Quote:
The project cost around $40,000, said Steve Santamaria, director of Intel’s Software and Solutions Group responsible for tracking independent software companies (ISVs) and helping them grow with Intel’s help.
Quote:
The project began internally last year, when Intel began soliciting views from its employees about the hottest software companies. Not only were professionals from Intel Capital, Intel’s investment arm, contributing their views, but so to were Intel employees from India, Japan and China. They saw companies in foreign markets that Intel employees in the U.S. were missing. With Intel moving to embrace fast-moving Web 2.0 applications, Santamaria’s team decided that it could use the help of the wider external community, too. Intel’s internal site had 500,000 visitors, and 1.4 million page views on 80,000 contributions. One company that came to Intel’s attention through the effort was fast-growing email provider Zimbra, recently acquired by Yahoo. Intel met with Zimbra, and consulted with its management team so that Zimbra could work well on Intel’s chip platform.
the editor from » Intel Introduces “Cool Software” Social Networking Site » Blog Archive* *Alice Hill’s Real Tech News - Independent Tech has talked to Intel staff of CoolSW already.

why don't you go there and ask this person, Jason Powell?
Cool Software - Pligg Content Management System
to break down the $40K so we will know why the project totaled at $40K

"Intel's revenues for the quarter were $10.09 billion, a 15 percent jump from the $8.74 billion in sales rung up a year ago."

Intel 3Q beat, optimism boosts stock - Yahoo! News

I don't think they are to worried about it.

The guy could be under contract. It's not like we're going to be able to know all of the details. It's kinda pointless to speculate.

The great news is they are using Pligg. Woot!

That's incredible that Intel would put up 40k for just a barely customized template.
Regardless of the details, I wouldn't be shocked at all if a big time corporation dumbed $40k into this. There is a whole other universe out there that us smaller webmasters forget about.

I've got a friend who owns multiple radio stations. He started a local cars site. He charged $70k for a skyskraper add...and got it. If he used Adsense, he's probably make $100 this year.

...How the other half lives!
