Yeah, I would rely on the community (of any project) unless the money was committed ahead of time (e.g., $xx,xxx dollars was gathered and placed in an escrow account).

Hopefully our new income from Pligg Pro sales will eventually lead to allowing us to hire a full time developer. My goal for Pligg is to be able to hire AshDigg to work full time on the project, but I don't want to rely on investors who have terms that come with the money. Selling Pligg products and receiving the occasional donation might just be enough to get our first staffer.

If you can just get the software to a slightly more stable state with some documentation, you can start charging. I am not sure what the deal is with the donors at the moment, but you could also a private area for donors on the forum where you promise to try your best to answer technical problems, and increase the minimum donation to $50, say.
