The templates have nothing to do with SEO, it's all done within the pligg core files, .htaccess & mod_rewrite

Chuck, templates do have something to do with SEO. But the way that most of the templates are designed are so similar that it doesn't make much of a difference.

I'd sure like to hear your logic behind that. The templates use the smarty (template lite) commands and CSS.. Are you suggesting the background color of a page could effect search engine rankings?

Actually, I'd agree with Yankidank. Templates CAN affect SEO, such as in terms of heading tags, bold tags, layout, proper placement of navigational links, footer and modules -- and YES, even background color. For example, if your text foreground color is too close to the same variation of color as your background color, then you might be penalized. If your text size is too small, then you might get penalized. Or maybe a template has lots of objects being loaded as modules (such as flash) to make it look cool, yet it dramatically slows down the page load -- speaking of which, if your page is quite large with content (objects/images) and your CSS file is large too, then you might not even get indexed because a search engine might leave the page due to how long it's taking to load. Or maybe your template uses JS in the menu which cannot be read by search engines? Many of these things do matter in SEO.

I think what really made the difference with my website, was to change the name in the meta data file from Pligg to Mysite. From that first day suddenly my website would appear in the search results.

At Google they seem to know that pligg sites often contain a lot of spam and not much content so they are filtered out.

Duplicated links as well. Too many links.

Invalid xhtml, which Pligg has fixed recently.
