How do I make only the first page different?

I would like to make only the first page of my site different (only show for example the 5 most voted from one category, show the 5 newest from another category, some photos and text and so on, you know Like a portals frontpage. (I don´t want to list all published news on the first page.)

I started to work with index_center.tpl but that was not very clever since it is used by all the published pages in all categorys....

Should I maybe rename the index.php to published.php and just change the index.php - but then I probably have to rename a LOT of things everywhere in the script I guess..

Does anyone have an idea how to make this please?
