| sIFR (or Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) is a technology that allows you to replace text elements on screen with Flash equivalents. Put simply, sIFR allows website headings, pull-quotes and other elements to be styled in whatever font the designer chooses - be that Foundry Monoline, Gill Sans, Impact, Frutiger or any other font - without the user having it installed on their machine. sIFR requires JavaScript to be enabled and the Flash plugin installed in the reading browser. If either condition is not met, the reader's browser will automatically display traditional CSS based styling - the user won't know the difference. |
sIFR pretty much makes your site different from the others by letting you use more exciting fonts without risking the text not displaying if the users don't have java or flash installed. I thought that this might be a good idea, since SOOOO many Pligg sites look exactly the same because people are having trouble adapting to Smarty. So I took it upon myself to write a guide for how to add Smarty to your Pligg template, which can be found in the wiki here. Right now there are some issues with transparency, but that might just be my own clumsiness when trying this out for the first time. You can alter the background color, so as long as you don't have an image in the background you should be fine.
Currently you can see a demo of this here. Changing fonts is a snap, I'll try to post more font files later to make it even easier for you. The next version of Pligg (beta 8) will probably come standard with sIFR for the Mollio template.
The standard font that this comes with is Daniel. Here's what it will look like:
