Well, you would need to enable these modules in the backend under the admin menu called "Module Management." There you will find the three modules that will be necessary to allow video and images -- "extra fields", "embed videos" and "image upload." After you click on the link to install them, you must then click on the names of these modules to read through instructions for adding the required code to your template files. You will also need to make sure that "extra fields" is set to "true" from the admin configure section.
Now, if you just want to hotlink images from another site within your description field, then you need to add the proper html tags that you will allow within the description field, such as <img> for images. You can add these tags by going to your admin, then select configure, then select submit. From there, you will see "HTML tags to allow" -- this is where you enter your html tags.
