Question What is Pligg actually for?

I was interested in using Pligg because I need a CMS for orignal news items that are being generated and posted online.

From what I can see so far, there is no place to enter a news story, just a summary of a news story on another site.

Is Pligg basically just a news-aggregator tool? Or can it actually be used by an organization that wants to put their own news items online?

To put it more simply: How can I add a full news item to Pligg, not just a summary and link to a source on another site?

This is called an "editorial". If you search the forum for editorial you will find a lot of information on how to use pligg this way.

Unfortunately, doing a search on "editorial" turns up a lot of results where you are telling peole exactly what you told me.

    I did find this information:

The "Description" is the area where users are supposed to enter editorial content..

As for setting it up correctly for editorials

    Admin> configure> Submit
Set "Require a URL when submitting" to false

Set "Show the URL input box" to false
    Set "Validate URL to false"

    Admin> configure > outgoing
Set "Enable outgoing links" to false

To change the word "Description" to something else go to admin>modify language> and type the word description, you will see where it is used and be able to change it to what ever you wish.

    Hope that helps..
I actually went in and changed the first values to false when I was trying to figure out how to use Pligg the way I want.

The trouble continues to be that I want to create content (as this is a "Content Management System") and that content is going to contain images and headers and list items and other HTML elements.

So I'm back to square one, wondering how (if) I can use this application to do what I want.

It looks like I can't. I've been looking into Drupal and Joomla and DotNetNuke, and I think those are actual Content Management Systems.

I get the impression that Pligg is more of generic Digg or Fark, allowing anyone to install and run their own news aggregator site.

From what I have seen in the scant documentation and ellusive forum responses, this is not an application for people who want to put original content on a website, using a content managment system.

Pligg is a flexible content management system. People use it for different purposes. You can add images using the image module, you can add html by setting which <tag> elements you wish to allow in admin> config> submit>

I would suggest reading the wiki for documentation and as for elusive forum responses. You can't seriously expect someone to answer the same question multiple times just because people don't want to take the time to actually do some reading?

No, I think it's an issue of the application coming "out-of-the-box" for a very specific type of set-up, and having a terrible...I mean AWFUL user interface.

I had to come to the forums just to figure out how to change my password, even after being told a number of times that I should do so. Why not just add in information on HOW to do it...Better yet, why not make it EASY to figure out how to do it.

I've been working with and building software applications since 1995, and I think I know my way around a typical web app. The fact that I couldn't even get started without coming to a forum to ask BASIC questions is a huge indicator that no time was spent, at all, on the user interface.

Not trying to be an ass, just telling it like it is.

You change your password through your profile page.. Where else would you expect it to be? You make all these assumptions and criticize the software. Maybe you should take some time to get to know the software it before you go off bashing it.

Your comments are a huge indication that you fail to realize this isn't 1995 anymore.

Well, consider the fact that I installed Pligg because I WANTED it to be a solution, not to have a reason to bash it. I was 100% pro-Pligg as I was getting it installed.

Your attitude alone has soured me to Pligg. I hope you are proud of yourself.
I thought my feedback was legitimate...

To change the password, my first thought was to go to "Admin" and then "User Management" then click on "god." This is how WordPress does it. This is how most multi-user applications do it.

When I decided to try the Profile page, I saw a field called Username, with "god" as the default, and below that was a field called Homepage, directly below which was a button (?) labeled "Modify."

Since the "Modify" button was IMMEDIATELY below the Homepage label, and not at the top right or bottom right, of the "Profile" section, where MOST applications would put it, to indicate that it is used to MODIFY THE PROFILE, I assumed that it was used just to change the Homepage.

I mean, you don't have to be Jakob Nielsen to know that this is not intuitive UI.

Anyway, this is all moot. I've just installed Drupal, which had a fantastically simple installation walkthrough.

    Good luck with Pligg.
