Is there any way to discard old upcoming stories that were never published?
For example, if an old upcoming story is staying unpublished for 3 days, I want to automatically retire that story so that it does not show up in the upcoming page.

You did not understand my post. I was looking for a way to "retire" (change the status to discarded) upcoming stories after a certain amount of time.

Never mind. I wrote the following code and added it to the upcoming.php page:

// Discard upcoming stories after 3 days if they are not published
$tsdt = date('Ymd000000', strtotime("-3 day"));
$sql = "UPDATE ".table_links." SET link_status='discard' WHERE link_status='queued' AND link_date <= $tsdt";
$db->query($sql);
