So I upgraded 2 of my sites today to the most recent pligg 9.9.0 and little did I know I was opening the door to SPAM again. As soon as I updated 9.8.2 I was getting nailed with spam users but thanks to AhsDigg I didn't have any comments it seems the anti spam comment mod stayed in affect!

I just want to know why would you release 9.9.0 if you knew it was only going to bring trouble to pligg users via spam users, and spam comments. Lets be very blunt with this question... why even release 9.9.0 in the first place when 9.8.2 with added mods was more safe and secure?

Another crazy thread from bbrian017

Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a child?
9.9.0 comes pre-packaged with spam protection with both akismet, and captcha.

Try again.

Well I am getting many fake registered accounts again hahaha but for now I have removed the register.php until AShDigg finishes up the e-mail confirmation module.

Seriously I hope when 1.0 is released this e-mail confirmation mod is included.

chuckroast... wouldn't your days be filled of boredom without me.

I also have another question specifically for you. Why do you only reply to my posts when you can make me look wrong. Don't you see me posting for help and support in other forums

I didn't see anything new in the release notes or revisions that would have suggested it would be safer. With that in mind, I wouldn't expect it to be safer and wouldn't install it if I had sites that got hit with spam.

Actually, you're going to get spam regardless unless you stop registration. For the most part you just need to find a happy medium, either you're going to get new users and spam, or just deny registration. There's ways to reduce it but not stop it, and with enough loop holes people aren't going to register anways.

no no... I have been running pligg 9.8.2 now for 2 months and have had zero spam with this installed, http://forums.pligg.com/pligg-mods/4...html#post51913

Well I mean Zero automated spam anyways. I see what you mean buy real people spam, but that doesn't happen often it's robots and programs that we need to stop and that link is the key!

That's just because the automated spammers haven't customized thier software for the handfull of sites that use those modifications. The default installations are a bigger target. Once these customizations are in the default install I'm sure they'll alter thier spamming software to once again bypass it. There's website submission software for link lists, directories, and what not that already let you do auto e-mail confirmation so that's no biggy at all. Captcha isn't really that big of a deal either if you know what you're doing.

I only reply in order to clear up any misinformation you may be spouting at the time. I fail to see where it is my duty to reply to every one of your threads. Am I on your payroll?

I can only dedicate so much free time to providing people with support. Some people abuse this, and after a certain point it no longer becomes support, it becomes free continuous education, consultation, and hand holding service.

Pligg provides you with the Ball, it's up to you to take it, and run with it.

Do you really think they will get passed an e-mail verification mod? I don't think so... Isn't this impossible to do seeing someone has to be on the other side of the e-mail sending it back into the loop?

Why would it be hard to send it back? They can sign up at a pligg site and spam already. Why can't they automate e-mail registrations at say free hosts or as many spammers do just register cheap .info domains, use those e-mails to register to your site. Then login to them and confirm. It's actually quite simple and can all be automated.
