    Smile

    do following things with my.cnf

    1) Increase the value of wait_timeout
    2) Increase the value of sort_buffer_size under [myisamchk]

    This worked for me.

Just a guess, but it could be one of the following directories in your server root:
    /etc/
    /var/lib/mysql
    /etc/mysql

Just downloaded pligg about 20 minutes ago, installation went super smoothly and everything seemed to be humming along.

I received this same dastardly string of "Warning: MySQL server has gone away" errors over and over while I was enabling a few pligg modules right after creating 4 or 5 test categories. I am not 100% certain, but I believe it happened after enabling the site-wide user contact module.

Unfotunately, I also lost ftp access to the pligg directory completely (using cpanel or cuteftp) and nothing loads from the domain directory in ie, ff, opera or safari, so can't even delete everything and start over that I can see right now.

Any advice or experimental workarounds are welcome -- installation had not been live more than 10 minutes before this so not sure what overtaxed the db.

Nope, that's not it. Have lots of domains on this server and even other sites under this domain and no probs.

Something is overquerying from just this installation.

Maybe I fouled up something on this installation, but really cannot see where since everything was smooth until I started enabling modules. I'll create another db in another directory and another domain try another installation.
