Does anyone know of an easier solution for adding MANY categories? I need to add nearly 300 categories/subcategories and it is a complete pain in the arse with the way pligg adds categories and subcategories. I like javascript effects as much as the next guy, but it's ridiculous when you need to add more than 20 categories to pligg.

There really ought to be a simpler way -- just a simple form to create parent categories and then a drop down for creating subcategories. The way it is now is gawd awful.

Anyway, does anyone have a good solution?

I'm with you on this one Blaze.. While Java, Scriptalious and mootools effects look great on the front end, it is very time consuming on the backend.

I'd prefer just a plain simple form, where you create your main categories, and then select from a drop down box for subcategories.. Having to drag and drop subcategories is time consuming, and I have noticed I nearly always have to drag the subcat twice..

Yah, the whole drag-n-drop thing from the admin with categories really stinks. You have to reorder them all the time. And the worse part is, if you go over 20 categories, and you have to create a new subcategory for the top one, then you have to keep dropping it up the ladder until you can reach the top. Took me nearly 60 seconds just to create one darn subcategory!

I've said the same thing as you guys since we started using the ajax drag and drop method. I'm all for changing to a simpler non-ajax method. As for the original post topic, wtf are you doing with hundreds of categories? Why not use tags?

yeah, you gotta drop ajax for the back-end admin categories... you end up bashing your head against the screen...

today, I just cut down over 100 categories and sub-categories... to 26 main categories...

having too many categories is just pointless... it really doesn't work and only confuses users...

keep it to the minimum and use tags...

Some sites in particular must use subcategories because the main categories are just too broad or aren't as heavily searched for. Not to mention, if you want good seo for particular keywords, then you have to devise your subcategories accordingly.

As an example, this site uses individual "States" as a category, such as California, Illinois, Nevada, etc. To keep the sub level to a bare minimum, only a few major popular cities are listed as subcategories in each state. This is EXTREMELY important to me only because my keyword research shows that very few people are actually searching for "California Keyword" -- yet thousands among end are searching for "Los Angeles Keyword", "San Francisco Keyword" and "San Diego Keyword." Now, just imagine if each state has only 4 popular cities on average -- that's a lot of categories!

Tags aren't a good enough option for me yet unless they fix them within pligg. Because within Pligg, it uses waaaaaay too much CPU to open up the cloud page. Good lord, can you imagine if some poor soul clicked on the tag "los angeles keyword" that brought over 3000 results? There is no pagination within the tag cloud page itself and it just lists EVERYTHING on one page - and even if there was pagination, that's just one problem with the cloud page, as the results aren't great at all. There are some listings without the actual tag listed in the story at all -- which is kind of strange, considering that tags are suppose to be just that... TAGS. Tags just aren't handled correctly within pligg and cause tons of duplicate content as well. I had to disallow "/tags" in my robots.txt document from being indexed on another site due to Google indexing it's own variables for tags such as "keyword+keyword5+keyword2." None of these tags were even listed in my site, then there was the duplicate content with "tag/keyword+keyword5/00002321114544" -- which I have no clue as to what that was about or where it came from.

Regardless, does anyone know of a way to just remove the javascript effects and add a simple form to the admin for adding categories?
