The thing is that it is hard to change your mentality when you can't see examples of what to do...
I'd like something more concrete than just "change your mentality"... I'm not offending you here, really. I REALLY want to see concrete examples of websites (PLIGG or not) and products that have gotten you some (or a lot of) money...

thanks...

Pligg is a great system with interesting features to keep people coming back if the design lives up to the hype of the backend.

My site makes from 0-100 month recently. I won't be specific, (compromising tos) but on the higher end of that, and it's basically from posting a couple articles a day that are relevant to my topic (specific niche, hip hop) and realizing people will be searching google for this relevant content.

I use the links as more of a source of the article, but re-write it myself.

I'm the main poster on my site, I would imagine, I could x10 my income if I had a community backing me, but unfortunately, I started with a forum to build the community and spent to much time on that.

Now to convert them over to the front page, and register, isn't working out.

The potential is definitely there, and Pligg is a great way to do it, to answer your question as specifically as possible.

I'm not making a dime from Pligg yet. I only have one site and I haven't promoted it yet. (Press release, I'm hoping for a social bookmarking buzz, PPC, and contest are all part of my plans for this one.)

Unfortunately, I learned a hard lesson this past year about going for the long term. One my sites was sued and shut down. At one point is was insanely profitable.

I don't think a "resume" is really appropriate for a Pligg forum, but if you want you can send me a PM.

Brandon

Yeah, I also must say that you should not get stuck on Ad Sense. They may be good for the pockets of the Google team, but for the websites that host them it is almost nothing.

For example, I went from Ad Sense to the ad network I use now. With Ad Sense it took me a year to make my first hundred. Then when I switched to my current "boutique" ad network and it took me one month to make the same amount. A boutique ad network can make you 12 times what Ad Sense will, even more depending on the subject matter.

How to find the right boutique ad network? I found mine by buying ads through them. So find where you would want to promote your site and that is probably the right one for you.

So can a Pligg site be profitable? Yes, I think it can. Just try to find a subject matter that no one else is really doing well with a site like this. Then promote it like crazy. It will take a ton of work, but I have faith in this great software. My site has been public for about two weeks and I have well over 100 members that have signed up. I have only begun!

To be clear, I DO NOT run this niche ad network. I am only one of their "publishers". In fact I think I am one of their smallest "publishers".

I use Fixion Media Advertising Network myself. However, keep in mind that to get on these networks is not the same as say Amazon or Ad Sense. They are very strict about who they let in because they are a very specific form of niche advertising. Fixion is pretty much for premium hard rock and metal sites only. Anyone can buy ads, but they will only assign code to sites that fit their specific target audience.

Another one for hard rock and metal is indieclick

Not sure what your site is, but you should hunt down the one that would fit specifically to your site. The more customized it is to your audience, the more money you will make. The advertisers pay more to reach that specific niche. Where as with Ad Sense you pay way less (as an advertiser) because it covers pretty much everyone on the planet. If the advertiser pays less, you get less.

Not sure to be honest. Just for kicks I tried a few things and I ended up with a bunch of info on advertising. As in education ON advertising as opposed to advertising FOR educational websites.

So I tried to put that sentence into quotes. "Advertising for educational websites" I got zero results. So you do have a challenge ahead of you.

Do you know what the biggest websites in the industry are? What ad networks do they use? I latched onto the one I use because I kept running into them on sites I enjoy. Sorry I could not help more. Educational websites are not my expertise.
