Hi, first post: I'm very excited that Pligg is open source & I can't wait to get started on building a site & contributing to this community.

So how profitable is a Pligg site?

My only concern so far is risk/reward --- how profitable can a Pligg site be?
Since the front page of any Pligg site has mostly external links, what is the potential for ad revenue?

For you Pligg webmasters out there, are you getting a monthly Adsense check from your site ? Enjoying great revenue ? What has your experience been like?

I think you're headed down the wrong direction. If your main goal is just to get revenue coming from your pligg site, you will probably end up with a site that isn't very user friendly, and tries to force feed ads down the users throat. Unless you're some HUGE site with millions of visitors, I doubt you're going to make any money for a long time off your pligg site from adsense or other context sensitive ad campaigns anyway.

For me, my pligg site is about something I enjoy ... a hobby. So it's fun for me to keep visiting it and posting new links etc. If I was looking at it strictly from a "how much is this earning me" perspective, I would have given up a long time ago.

I have to agree. I do not see much ad rev being generated by a pligg site, at least in the begining.

Let's change the word "pligg" to "blog" and "wordpress".

Hi, first post: I'm very excited that Wordpress is open source & I can't wait to get started on building a site & contributing to this community.

So how profitable is a Wordpress blog?

So is your point that pligg is just like a blog ?

Certainly building a Pligg site will be fun - I wouldn't be here otherwise.

If you make websites as a hobby and for fun - thats great, because you can also make money building websites too. A reward for your efforts.

Just curious, I wonder how much per day Digg makes from the top Google ads they have. Or Shoutwire - they have an interesting mechanism where external sites load within a frame with ads at the top. Check this link to see what I'm talking about:http://www.shoutwire.com/viewstory/1...re_Also_Blonde

At one point in development I wanted to open links with hidden frames so that users could press the F1 key to drop-down a user menu and vote/comment for the article they are reading. I think I might bring back this idea in a template design down the road. This could be useful for placing ads on article pages and offering additional content while reading a story.

I guess the point made by the responders above is that Pligg is like other software back-ends in the sense that it (the software) itself doesn't determine if a site makes money or not-- it is the site itself. You can power it with whatever software you use, but in the end the software will still be a tool, and not an end in itself that makes or breaks your goals for monetization.

That is, just like any site, if you want your site to be successful and make money, asking if Pligg will do it for you may not be the direction you want to use, and instead you could ask yourself how you can make your site popular so it gets plenty of traffic from your target audience and that they click on the ads.

With apologies to JFK: "Ask not what Pligg can do for your website. Ask what you can do for your website."

This would be a very welcomed feature -- at the very least, it would be nice to test the results you can get from ads outside of the frame of an external article.

Thanks for the great points. In business, it's ready-fire-aim, so certainly I am going to build a pligg website, and will be very interested in sharing successful income strategies with other pligg webmasters in the future.

Yankidank,

That sounds like a good idea, a light and gentle (none obtrusive, like Netscape's) frame would be a great service for the reader/user as a pligg nav tool. I think non-techie users would appreciate such feature since it will ease their browsing experience.

olddddd post i know.....but if we wanted to throw digg into the mix...... they make roughly 8k a day off adsense as stated on many articles on the web...so if pligg is like digg....its all up to you and how hard you push your site!...it better be original too!!

just my personal comments!!
