Google is omitting search results when friendly url's are used. It happens because Pligg stores each story at three different address', and Google defines this as SPAM. The 3 address' are:

> 1. www.mydomain.com/story/545/
> 2. www.mydomain.com/trackback/545/
> 3. www.mydomain.com/category/story-name/

Ideally, friendly url's would use this address only: www.mydomain.com/category/story-name/

The other problem is Google, Yahoo, MSN and others are not indexing Pligg sites correctly. In Google, type: 'site:hollywoodscoops.com' to see what I mean. Notice the page descriptions are all wrong. Pligg developers can fix this by doing the following:

> Add <meta name="description" content="This is my page description."> to every page.

Just paste it in the link_summary.tpl in your template just after {$story_content}

I think it would be cool if those links could be dynamic for SEO purposes. Instead of having 'Click Here for Story' it'd be awesome if it was 'Click here for keyword keyword' where the keywords would be specific to that story.
canadianguy33,

Thanks for the code. I think this may be better:

<a href="{$url}" target="_blank">Click here for the story...</a>

This way the link opens up in a new window instead of same window.

Look for {$story_content} around line 76 in link_summary.tpl

Hi,

This thread interests me, particularly the problems canadianguy is having with the urls. I seem to be having the exact same problem. My site is brand new and not been indexed yet so I would like to get this right before I let google crawl it.

When I change to method 2 and impliment the changes to the htaccess file, it looks as though the URL's are being re-written correctly but I get a 404 error. It seems like the browser is actually looking for the http://www.domain.com/directory/page which doesn't physically exist within my website.

I see that canadianguy isn't currently using friendly urls on the hollywoodscoop.com site so he obviously gave up (as I feel like doing tbh).

Please let me know if anyone manages to get this working. Thank you v much.

This is another really old thread. If you notice Digg uses underscores, not hyphens. There are people who say that underscores are better for getting indexed in search engines and there are some people who say the opposite.

Ok, dumb question. I had read on the Google webmaster Site that Google indexes dynamic URL's, as of 2006, if I remember correctly. Is this not the case?

So is it still important to create static URL's?
