How to change title length in sidebar stories

Does anyone know how to change the length of the titles that are displayed in the sidebar_stories module? I've tracked it back to libs/sidebar_stories.php and links.php, but nothing I try has any effect on the length of the title, and I can't find where that is being set or where it is being truncated.

Any help?

$ss->TitleLengthLimit = 26;

Strangely this only changes the length of the Published story headers in the sidebar. The Top Stories in the headline remain at the same length. Are they changed elsewhere?
