I need help to display advertisement banners above/below the side bar. Please advice what to edit to display banners.

If you're using the yget template, you can put your code in templates/yget/sidebar.tpl.

Creat a file YourAdcodefile.tpl in /templates/yget/sidebar_modules/ & put your ad code in this file.
Now add this line to your sidebar.tpl file at the location where you want to display (like on the top or bottom or middle):
{assign var=sidebar_module value="YourAdcodefile"}{include file=$the_template_sidebar_modules."/wrapper.tpl"}
