GET THE OFFICIAL FACEBOOK MODULE HERE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to help fund a Facebook Connect module (Facebook Developers | Resources).

Benefits of Facebook Connect
  • Users can simply login with their Facebook account without going through the registration process.
  • Increase user interaction and your traffic through Facebook notifications and news-feeds.
  • Facebook users can post stories (without registering)
  • Facebook users can post comments (without registering)

Fetch user data from Facebook
  • Fetch data like name, location, profile picture and use it on pligg site. (NOTE: Some data may not be available for some users depending on FB user's privacy settings)
  • If any of the user's friends are also registered on the pligg site, they will automatically be friends on pligg site. (+)
  • Present the FB authenticated user the option to invite FB or non-FB friends to join Pligg site
  • Present the FB authenticated visitor the option of registering a Pligg site account using FB info.

Facebook users will be able to receive Facebook notifications when:
  • There is a reply to their pligg post or a comment thread that they're subscribing to
  • They receive a new PM (+)

News-Feed will be published on to the user's FB wall when the user:
  • Logs in for the first time
  • Comments on a post
  • Creates a new post

Pligg Version Support
  • Module should support Pligg 1.0
  • Module should integrate with Wistie template by default

Template Mod for Pligg Site Visitor
  • Display Facebook Connect control next to Register link for all Anonymous visitors (see fb-connect-control.jpg, for example)

Admin
  • Site Admin can input Facebook Connect API Key
  • Pick FB Connect widget format(s) (+)
  • Pick FB Connect widget display location(s) (+)
  • Enable/Disable display of FB Connect display control(s) (+)

I have asked for a long laundry lists of ideas but some can be considered "nice to haves" (see items with '+').

I would love to have an estimate for some or all of these features so I can raise the funds to get it done. I think this would be a massive traffic building tool for our pligg community.

I believe that Facebook's terms and conditions don't allow you to fetch and store data onto your own site. Meaning that you can't use Facebook Connect to store information like the users email, name, friends, etc. onto your website. I haven't read the terms too carefully yet, but from what I understand FB Connect wouldn't be a solution as a quick way for users to register a new account, but could be used as a way for users to post stories and comments without having to register an account. I'll try to look into the terms later to see what exactly is allowed so I can determine what features could be created using a FB Connect module.

I checked into this and here is the skinny ...

The list of "storable" information in the api:
Storable Information - Facebook Developers Wiki

A clear distinction referring to the list above in a fb dev forum:
Facebook Platform Developer Forum / Information Storage

I hope this helps. Even the basic "Connect with Facebook" capability is of great value.

Less than a week to vote in this poll folks! Help the Pligg team know whether this is a valuable module to fund by voting yes or no! Think about it - with FB ads or a small FB app, this would be a major traffic enhancer. Can you tell I'm eager? Click and open your wallets it will come back to you!

Looks like there was a lot of enthusiasm for this module request - 14 said they'd be willing to donate funds in just a few weeks the poll was open. As you wrap up a 1.0 release, I would love to see a Chipin setup for this to get the ball rolling. Have money, need somewhere to send it

Thank you, Mr. Roast. Is there any ballpark estimate on the amount that would get this prioritized/paid for? Having a goal would encourage more contributions imho - that said, chipping in now and keeping a little powder dry ...

I can't give you an estimate at the moment. I set the chipin to expire in September. I would imagine that Pligg 1.0 final will be out before that but I wanted to give it a bit of a open window. Once more people start contributing we'll have a better idea of what the budget is to work with and see what features listed above can or can not be implimented. If for some reason people don't contribute and the interest in this is low. I'll refund the people that have have contributed. Also I would expect that on monday we'll change this chipin over to the Pligg one and transfer any contributions into that since Yankidank is out of town for the weekend and I didn't have access to start it under the pligg account.

So, it is more of a question of the availability of a developer resource for this type of module? Any 3rd parties that could be contacted to commission the work? I was hoping for much sooner than late 3rd, early 4th quarter. If there's no one who can do the work regardless of funding but rather due to availability, that is a different matter. Did I say I was eager?

Just took a look at some of the links you posted about what information FB allows you to keep and it looks like we could come up with something for FB to log users in and perhaps create an account quickly through FB connect. I'll have to run through it again tomorrow to figure out the details and try to see what approach is allowed and would work best for a variety of sites. I'll try to post a proposal for what the FB connect module would do if we were to make one, and then if enough people agree I could see how many hours it would take to make it happen and then do a Chipin event to reach that goal.
