Hello all,

I wish to allow my users when they first register or when they activate this in their profile for them to be emailed as soon as a new story is published that fits the category they are watching. Or even have the option to have a "digest" of todays additions or weeks additions. I think you will agree this is a great feature for pligg.

I am guessing a module for this doesn't exist as it is too specific?

I wanted to ask, if the Pligg experts can just give me a rough guide on how to create this in just a sentence or two. I have decent enough PHP skills to do this but I just need some guidance on how to approach this.

Also are there any tutorials on how to create pligg modules?

My Approach

1) When new story published to a category, check DB for those that want notification for this category and email them or PM them.
2) At end of day, send digest to those that are interested in a particular category

Anything I should consider?

Thanks all

OK, I haven't had the time to do this and still don't, so I am willing to pay for this.

I am going to find and hire a developer, anyone else want to chip in that wants this as a module?

Hi GrantMePeace,
I actually saw your post a little while ago and started following it.. I wanted a similar thing so I went out and actually developed it for myself as it seemed there was no other solution about.

My module will send certain users an email as html or plain text and the email format is fully customisable in .tpl files. To subscribe to receive emails, you need to log into the admin section and add your email to a list. Its not as fully featured as your suggestions, but it served my purpose of being notified of all new posts to my site.

It could however be extend this to allow standard users the ability to opt in/out to receive notifications for set categories, or to receive a daily digest..

If there is some interest or support in this, I could do it.

Hi Malexs,

I would really like it if that could be developed into a module with all those features. How much do you think it will cost?

I would be happy to pay the bulk (20%-40%) of the cost and hopefully others will join me in donating the full cost to you.

Maybe you should start a new thread in the modules section as I am not even sure if anyone reads this thread any more.

maybe we should think bigger!

Maybe we should consider a notification module!

Not for any specific notification but for them all. We can have check boxes for each available website notification. User settings can be default yes to all.

comment notification
add as a friend notification
story published notification

any other notifications members might want?

yes i thought this too as i was writing my module. So during its creation i modified it slightly so that it can be easily extended to cater for all types of emails. Providing there are events for each of those items it would be very easy to expand my module to do this on a site basis. But of course, to be more useful it needs to be on a profile by profile basis.

It's been a while since i looked into it.. I'll have another look soon to see whats involved to add something to the user profile page...

Hi Guys,
I have been working on this and finally got it working. You can see some information about it Pligg Notify Module | Plugins

The plugin allows you to receive either weekly or monthly email digests on your selected categories, as well as getting notified when you have a new comment on your story. As XPS600 pointed out this can be expanded to cover email notifications for when your story gets published or you get a new friend request.. let me know what you think and what else you would like to see in it.
