Do you mean the avatar to show near on each post?

It sounds like you are talking about profile avatars or images. Users can add them from their user profile page. When you view the profile page there should be a button that says "modify" which will take them to a page where they can edit their profile. From there they can choose an image to upload as their site avatar (profile picture). That avatar is then used for comments and in other areas across the site.

The picture that the user upload to their profile is the avatar. Something like you see on pligg forum when a user ask or responds to a question. If this is what you are talking about you would have to edit the link_summary file. I'm not quite sure what and where you would have to insert the code to get an avatar. Let me take a look and I will getback to you if no one does by the time I get the chance to figure it out.
