Can I skip Upgrading 1.03 to 1.21, and just install Clean
Hey guys,
I will do this in pieces, so as not to confuse and make it too long of a thread
My webmaster is NOT available to answer questions you will ask me, so I will have to relay and get back to you
Can I take 3-4 of my current 1.03 sites, which have had all sorts of minor issues in past year and just delete everything, put a clean 1.21 intall of Pligg on Server and then import the database, WITHOUT doing the upgrades
I am SURE it can't be this easy, right???
The reason I ask is that we did Version 1.21 over the weekend and things started acting funny at first. I was unable to load backend, then when it did load after 2-3 minutes, I was not able to killspam or delete users, change ad banners or any of the admin chores I do daily.Starting at midnight today, whole server crashed every hour with 25 sites, and after we disabled Pligg sites, all returned to normal again
My webmaster seems to think that maybe the OLD issues had something to screw up the installs, so now I have 3 sites down until we figure out what do.
The ONLY reason I don't want to start brand new is the age, Alexa and # of links that we would los and I am afraid Google would tank the sites after seeing all this, especially whats been going on with my other sites post Penquin
Can anyone help m out or let me know what answers you need and I will relay them to him ASAP
Thanks
JB

1. How customized are your templates?
2. What was your upgrade process? Did you just overwrite the old files with the new one and run /install/upgrade.php? Were there any steps taken to upgrade your template as well as the backend?
3. Could you have your webmaster look into server error logs and check for signs that might point towards a cause? We need some sort of data to work from in order to diagnose a cause for your issue.

Answer to questions below:Per my webmaster to me to you....
1) No idea how customized the templates are, I/we didn't make them( I never did anything except admin duties)
2) Followed the instructions that came with the installer, which said to delete everything except the template folder and things listed in step5:
Delete all of the files from your server EXCEPT:
/avatars/ (entire directory)
/libs/dbconnect.php
/.htaccess
/favicon.ico
/settings.php
So things weren't overwritten exactly, but there are old files left over. I'd imagine the most significant of which are in the template folder. After this and chmod's in the instructions, ran the /install/upgrade.php and went from there. Site came back online and bogged server down significantly.
3) Logs are pretty quiet, not really seeing any errors just really really bad performance.
I might add that after Tom upgraded all sites, I was asked to see how thinggs were. Sites on server took 45 seconds to load, would not login to ADMIN until another 2 minutes, if at all
Reboot server 3-4 times and try again, all sites crashing ( 20-25) on VPS
Reboot last time with all Pligg Disabled, everything has been fine since, so we know its from the Upgrade, but what we NEED to know is how to fix it?
Should we do everything over again, or maybe you see something wrong in above notes
Thanks

I never heard back after I had answered your questions regarding HOW my webmaster upgrades sites. We tried to put sites back online yesterday again and they crashed the entire server once again
Any idea what went wrong from our steps above and how YOU would fix it?
Thanks

Interesting information, could you elaborate on that?
Try to upgrade / fix 1 site first and if still slow, switch to the Wistie template. Still slow?

Doesn't MySQL have a Slow Query Log? Can you take a look at how many records the 'links' table has? Do you really think the upgrade went correctly?

Either slow Query log from MySQL or some kind of debugging of the Slow queries. I showed how to filter out the slow queries in 1 of the other 'pligg is slow' threads.
I would try to upgrade 1 site first. Is there some way to transfer 1 site to another VPS temporarily? Restore backup of 1.0.3 of that site. Try to upgrade to 1.22 (I don't know if you can do it in 1 step, depends on how many versions are in between)
Check the differences in SQL tables from 1.0.3 and 1.22 because you're going to need it for the other sites.
Fix the slow queries first before you upgrade the rest.

I had answered this for you last week in the message thread below
Can you be a little more specific on what files I can send to you to look at?
Thanks
