My Pligg websites are using high CPU, Need Help on this!

    hi,

i am having 27 pligg websites installed on my server, today i got an email from server support saying that we have temporarily blocked your website due to high CPU usage.

they says all of my websites are doing the same (using high CPU).

Help me on how to optimize it, i am using Pligg 1.2.2, hosted my websites at hostgator.

Are you on a shared web hosting account? If you have that many sites (and they all get decent traffic) you should at least be using a VPS account with dedicated memory.

What Pligg version are you running on these sites? Has the web host provided any examples of what is causing the load?

You know, I just recently finally looked into CloudFlare. This is a service that will cache your static content and distribute it around the world for you. I had heard about it and assumed it was complicated and expensive (Several higher end sites advertise they use VPS and CloudFlare), but in fact it's simple and free (at least, I mean they have a free option.).

[you would think I have an affiliation, but I don't. Just telling you about my own experience, which is still very fresh in my mind.]

I set up about 10 sites with it a few days ago. 2 of them are pligg sites. I don't have any quantitative scoring, but I'd like to believe my sites are faster. But even if they're not, it's got to be a load off the server.

I am on a shared hostgator account, too (a reseller account). And, you will find the option to register with CloudFlare in your cpanel in the "Advanced" section. In the end I did it manually (rather than through cpanel) because I felt I had more control going through the manual steps myself, since I don't really know what the HG-linked registration does.

    This is what you do.
    1. create an account at CloudFlare
    2. add a website to your profile
    3. it will read your DNS records. it will know which IP you're hosted on.
    4. It will suggest to offer CDN (content delivery network) services to yourdomain.com as well as the www version of it. You hit ok.
    5. You will give it some high level settings for the service level (e.g. free), performance, and security settings you want.
    6. it asks you to change your nameservers to their nameservers.
    7. about 20 minutes later everything will be connected and you can start playing with your account.
    8. (the above order may not be exact, I'm just going from memory).

With CloudFlare, they give you apps to play with, these are services they will provide for you, nothing for you to install. You can configure your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools, set up a heat map app, and do many other things too.

Another thing, which was interesting, you can set some high anti-spam barriers, in the sense that it recognizes the IPs that are trying to access your site, and depending on the settings you set, if that IP is recognized for previous bad behavior, it will "challenge" the user, meaning it will put up a captcha. Since these Pligg sites are such targets for automated bots (probably using the same proxy servers that other bots are known to use), this might help cut down on that.

Actually, the more I think about it, maybe what you''re experiencing is simply that the world of autoposting has discovered your sites. I supposed that over 27 sites that could be a burden. Maybe doing this security thing through cloudflare would cut down on that a lot. And, for the short term can you just purchase the next higher level of CPU power?

Lastly, maybe there is malware on your servers. There was on mine for a short time. That could be hogging up your CPU. You can just ask HG to run a scan on your files. Also check to see whether any extra databases have been created in your accounts. (yes that happened to me). Even, there was a line added to my footer.tpl which redirected my site to another site.

Hopefully this route will ease the burden on your hosting account. I can't think of what you must be meaning when you reference .htaccess.

    Best of luck.

Another recommendation for Cloudflare. We've been using them for 2yrs on some high profile (non-Pligg) sites and really, really value their service (even the free version which is amazing).

Free plan does not support SSL. And SSL is needed for every FB app now and FB is where the traffic is. Pro plan starts at $200/month. I would buy a dedicate server instead.

We run dedicated servers and also run our sites through CloudFlare. If you have a problem setting up SSL or cannot afford it etc., you can use this to SSL your Facebook Page (for free): https://www.facebook.com/SocialServer
