    Thumbnail Link Preview

    Hey everyone!

I just recently installed pligg. Working great so far except one thing ... the thumbnail preview.

How can i make the preview actually get the preview of the whole url instead of just the base url?

For example i will enter www.myexample.com/example and it will show www.myexample.com

Is there any way to change this?

The current thumbnail preview will only grab the root domain. The reason this one was chosen was because it's the only one that was ad free and actually grabbed thumbnails 100% of the time without putting them in a queue. You can try other ones that websnapr and snap.com but I'll warn you, snap.com adds advertisements and websnapr puts the images in a queue most of the time so you can't even see the image for a while.

    in link_summary.tpl look for
    Code:
    <img src="http://msnsearch.srv.girafa.com/srv/i?s=MSNSEARCH&r={$url_short}"
That is where it's grabbing the thumbnail now. You'll have to modify that according to how snap or websnapr does it. You can find out on their sites.

    Thank you!
One related question: I just disable the thumbnail perview function to speed it a little (or does it?). How can I put the complete story URL here? The base URL seems to me confuses people a litte which doesn't make them think this is the story link. right?

    Thanks again

$url did not work for me with Girafa. Here are the t's and c's of their free account:

Need up to 2,000 thumbnail images a day?
You can use the Girafa Thumbnail Service for FREE!
Using the FREE Girafa Thumbnail Service allows you to make up to 2,000 Daily Image Requests for free. (You can use one FREE service per Web site).

Note that the number of Daily Image Requests is the total number of requests for thumbnail images made by or on behalf of a customer (using customer's identification code), during a period of one calendar day. When using the FREE Girafa Thumbnail Service you can use up to 2,000 images every day!

The free service is available in Homepage Mode only.
Homepage Mode means that Girafa will provide you with thumbnail sized images of the homepage of the URLs you send in the image requests. For example, the image Girafa provides for the URL Technology - Computers, Internet and Personal Tech News from CNN.com is that of the page displayed for the URL CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment & Video News , which is the homepage of the first URL.

Need more than 2,000 images a day?
Want to display thumbnail images of inner pages?
Girafa offers several low cost pricing packages - click here to learn more.

To sign up for the FREE Girafa Thumbnail Service, please type the URL of the site where you would like to display the thumbnail images, and press the "Continue" button below.

I tried $url with websnapr and it didnt work either. $url_short is fine.

The websnapr images are more like what I want so I have switched to them, and using the size 'micro' you can't see their ad either

The reason $url failed is that "The free service is available in Homepage Mode only.
Homepage Mode means that Girafa will provide you with thumbnail sized images of the homepage of the URLs you send in the image requests." - this means they are expecting only the domain name to provide the thumb and not the fully page url - hence was the issue. But if you use the un-ethical MSN griffa (the MSN license does not allow for it - but many use it) - it works in full URL mode.
