Are the thumbnail images being created on the fly? If so, will this have a significant impact on the performance of the site if images are submitted with every story?

It's quite easy to add multiple images upload. The roadmap that I've been following is:

- Edit story maintains linked image
- Admin image delete / upload new image
- Image captions
- Multiple image upload and load image from URL (dynamically or storing a local copy on your server)

A couple of random thoughts ...
Multiple Images: Site owners will probably want to be able to set the maximum number of photos that can be uploaded per story.

Admin change /delete: Ideally, thumbnails of any previously uploaded images would be shown on the submit form - along with a mechanism for removing / changing the images.

multiple images per post with restriction on max images would be great.

I have one doubt with this mod - I select the image upload and got image uploaded and will I able to delete/reupload a image to replace the existing one?

i downloaded latest svn code (upload_image module) and it's not working with thickbox. my img is opening in new window instead to do overlay. code i downloaded from download section on this forum worked with thickbox but was breaking other scriptlicious and prototype effects (sidebar effects). does anybody have simular expirience?

no, these files are not loaded. what should i do?

Make sure you downloaded the thickbox module from the downloads section on the forum. After uploading it to your modules directory you need to enable it in admin > modules.
