Savant and I were brainstorming the beginnings of a pligg interest groups module a few minutes ago, and we decided to keep a log of our ideas and development here. Easy to keep track of, and get some other ideas and feedback coming in this way.

Pligg Groups:
Since one of the primary goals of the pligg cms is to be able to share information, in either a general or focused way, we decided that one thing currently missing from pligg was the ability for users to be able to form smaller groups based on the stories they are interested in.

This means creating a module that lets users do the following:
  • create public / private interest groups
  • join groups either publicly, or via invitation only
  • group heirachy - admin, mods for groups if wanted
  • mini-forum for each group, to provide further discussion
  • the ability to link to relevant groups / discussions in the link_summary template
  • extras like blog or wiki page integration (??)
You're welcome to add any other feature suggestions or feedback. Don't know how much time we will be able to spend on it, but we hope it will be a useful addition to the pligg cms when completed.

Should you need any help - I can code for you.

The extras are of great interest to me - blog and wiki page would really be great.

Blog or Wiki - users contribute to it and once published (the first user starts it at the Wiki/blog) - it gets to the submitted stories (of Pligg) - users vote and they go to edit the Wiki the way they want it - so it is much like users having full control of the content.

A small suggestion would be the author/admin should approve the modification done and the process should be transparent.

So some sites which post deals or news can update and revise their content - and gives the power to users to edit the content if they find interesting stuff - would give Pligg a different unique touch and help it shed of being a Digg clone

All these ideas are great. But I’m asking myself why not pushing forward the idea of Elgg and Pligg integration ?
Here is the discussion : Elgg Pligg integration
Elgg can do all of this : Managing private and public groups, forum, blog, wiki, etc…

I’m absolutely not a coder, so I don’t know what is the easiest to do, but it seems to me a better and easier idea to do a bridge between Pligg and Elgg. Am I wrong ?

Whatever those guys want to do with elgg is fine by me, but I also think that pushing forward with pligg is a good idea. Personally I think the elgg integration is over-kill for a lot of users, and I would rather have something that is more stream-lined to fit in with, and further enhance, pligg. Plus coding things from scratch is sometimes more fun than going over someone else's code. lol

As for when we get started, mostly depends on Savant's schedule. He just went back to work after a week off, so we will have to work something out.
