I've been reading through a bunch of threads trying to wrap my head around thickbox and lightbox and scriptaculous and jbquery. It seems like since thickbox was introduced people are now thinking of switching all effects over to jbquery.

Is jbquery an alternative to scriptaculous?
Do the two offer similar functionality?
Does one eliminate the need for the other?

If so ...
Is there anything we would be missing out on from scriptaculous (such as the possibility of using it's Ajax features)?

Is jbquery as easy to implement for novices as scriptaculous?

At one point there was talk about replacing current scriptaculous effects with jquery, so that everything could use 1 library (the thickbox effects have proved popular). However it was decided that the default yget template was too heavily coded to use scriptaculous to make the change worthwhile.

Technically, jquery can do everything scriptaculous can do....and vice versa. There is a thickbox module that uses scriptaculous (which would solve the problem of multiple libraries and confusion) but it doesn't work 100% from my testing. I'm hoping it can be made to work, then jquery can be pushed aside.

If I was starting from scratch though, I'd use jquery for everything! Their website has all the functions needed to do whatever you want quite easily.

Direct comparisons are really hard to make - there are some cases when jquery is faster, others where it is not. I do think that jquery lets you do things in a way that is more lightweight in a lot of cases (less code) and their website is great for info on how to achieve different effects or actions.

Maybe it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day...
