Pligg forum user Laurent best explains what the .tpl files are all about. This is a repost.

"The .tpl files are the template files, aka the layout files. It only includes the html & design, so that's where you need to alter the code when you want to alter the layout. There are also smarty codes in those .tpl files, well... what they do is... they get the information from the .php files and includes them into the .tpl files... So the php files, you don't need to touch them, because that's the "real scripting/code". No, you don't need any editor, notepad is fine."

Thank you Laurent for this excellent explanation. I'm sure this will help many of us who are struggling to understand the relationship between the different files when templating our web site.
