Im having a few problems with htaccess. Quite frankly i just dont get it

How do you redirect all the pages and directories within the domain to the domains index page?

For example:

whatever.com/forum/
whatever.com/images/whatever.gif
whatever.com/whatever/whatever/test.php
whatever/portal.php
etc

All redirecting to:

whatever.com
